Free summer fun days for kids coming in January

AN initiative by the Wangaratta Baptist Church to create three action–packed days of activities in January to keep kids entertained during the school holidays, has received support from the Rural City of Wangaratta and others in the community.

The church is presenting "3 Free Summer Fun Days" on the first three Wednesdays in January which are open to the whole community.

Pastor Aaron Wardle from Wangaratta Baptist Church said each event will be held in a public space and each will be 100 per cent free for everyone.

"We are passionate about bringing hope to our community, and in January we are doing that in a very practical way," he said.

"In the summer school holidays it can often be hard to find things to do as a family, particularly things that are free, and so we are really pleased to be presenting these fun days for our community."

The first free summer fun day will be on Wednesday, January 4 from 10am until 2pm in Apex Park and will feature mobile laser tag, an adventure tools toy workshop and a free sausage sizzle.

The second will be held on Wednesday, January 11 at the Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre from 10am until 2pm and include free entry for the whole community to the pool, as well as the inflatable zone and a free sausage sizzle

The third is on Wednesday, January 18 in Apex Park and will feature two massive inflatable water slides, a dry jumping castle plus free sausage sizzle and it will also run from 10am to 2pm.

Pastor Aaron said council had been very supportive of the initiative which was put forward as part of a recent 'Pitcher This' placemaking project event.

He said two of the other community groups involved in the same Pitcher This event heard the Baptist Church pitch and decided they wanted to lend their support to the 'fun days' concept.

"We were very fortunate to receive $750 in funding from the program for the Summer Fun Days," said Pastor Aaron.

"Danzworx have also contributed financially and will be doing a dance pop–up, and the Wangaratta Concert Band – or ensembles connected with the band – will be supporting the fun days by providing some live music, with local jazz band, Dixie Blue, hoping to play."

Doug McGregor from the Wangaratta Concert Band said a great story had come out of council's Pitcher This event.

"Not only did we each receive funding for our community projects, but we also got to hear what other groups are doing and support each other – it's exciting to be able to work together," he said.

Michelle Parisi from Danzworx also saw the benefit to the community in the Baptist Church proposal and was pleased to support it financially – welcoming the invitation to do a dance pop–up at them.

"What fun events for kids, teens and families in our community – of course when we heard what was happening, we wanted to be involved," she said.

There is no requirement to book to attend any of the 3 Free Summer Fun Days, with children, teens, and families all encouraged to just turn up on the day.

Children do remain the responsibility of parents for the duration of the events, and if other community groups would like to be involved, they are welcome to contact with Pastor Aaron on 0415 721 590 or at aaron@wangarattabaptist.com.au with events also listed on Facebook.
