Heavy snowfalls has Hotham open early, set for big weekend

THIS week's Antarctic blast has brought bumper falls to Mt Hotham alpine resort and, even better, the ski season was brought forward a week.

For the first time since 2000, the resort has been blanketed in record snowfalls in late May and early June with more mega–dumps on the way from this weekend.

Although the Queen's Birthday long weekend traditionally marks the season opening, there's no guarantee of heavy snowfalls.

The one in a 20–year dump is welcome news for Hotham businesses as well as visitors; most businesses are up and running and ready to welcome early birds.

Some highlights for the Queen's Birthday long weekend include fireworks, cross country lessons, ski and snowshoeing tours as well as the sunset snowshoeing experience on Saturday and Sunday nights.

Hotham's restaurants and bars will light up with parties; don't miss The Grogans at the General on Saturday night, or if a bit of glitz and glamour is more your style, head to the "Over One Metre" party (also at The General) on Sunday night.

Last Run Bar is hosting its famous Austrian night again on Saturday night, and Greek night on Sunday.

Head to Hotham's website for the lowdown on everything from entry permits, carrying and fitting chains, which is compulsory, to gear hire to road conditions to where to eat and drink this weekend and beyond.

As always with a snow getaway, planning and booking ahead are the key to good times so get armed with all there is to know about hitting Hotham this winter season.
